Cultivating Self Awareness for Building Healthier Habits

Creating healthier habits is a goal many people share, but the journey often feels challenging and frustrating. One key factor that has made this process smoother and more effective for me and many others is self awareness. Understanding our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors helps us identify what drives our current habits and how to change them in a way that lasts.

Those who attended this year's first YOU ARE HERE Workshop in February had a glimpse of what self awareness looks like as they did short inventories of lies they believed about themselves and others, resentments they carried and also regrets. In order to move forward, we need to release whatever is weighing us down, but we won't know what that is until we take a good look and become AWARE.

And when we notice where we truly are, it's amazing! I can hear my self say: "AHH! WHERE was I that I didn't notice this before?" ha ha ha

This post explores why self awareness matters when building healthier habits and offers practical steps to develop it.

Why Self Awareness Matters for Habit Change

When you try to adopt a new habit, such as exercising regularly or eating more vegetables, you often face obstacles like procrastination, cravings, or stress. Without self awareness, these challenges can feel like random setbacks. But with self awareness, you can:

  • Recognize triggers that lead to old habits

  • Understand your emotional responses that influence behavior

  • Notice patterns in your daily routine that support or hinder change

  • Adjust your approach based on what you learn about yourself

For example, if you realize you tend to skip workouts when you feel overwhelmed at work, you can plan shorter sessions or schedule exercise at a different time. This insight comes only from paying attention to your feelings and actions.

How to Develop Self Awareness for Healthier Habits

Building self awareness is a skill that grows with practice. Here are some effective ways to start:

Keep a Habit Journal

Writing down your experiences helps you track progress and spot patterns. Note what you did, how you felt before and after, and any obstacles you encountered. Over time, this record reveals valuable insights.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It helps you become aware of cravings, stress, or distractions as they arise. Simple mindfulness exercises, like focusing on your breath for a few minutes daily, can increase your ability to notice internal states that affect habits.

Ask Reflective Questions

Regularly ask yourself questions such as:

  • What motivated me to try this habit today?

  • What made it easier or harder to stick with it?

  • How did I feel before, during, and after the activity?

Answering these questions honestly deepens your understanding of your behavior.

Use Feedback from Others

Sometimes others notice things about our habits that we miss. Trusted friends or coaches can provide observations that help you see blind spots. Be open to their input and reflect on it.

Examples of Self Awareness in Action

Consider Sarah, who wanted to eat healthier but often reached for snacks when stressed. By journaling, she noticed her cravings peaked in the late afternoon. Mindfulness helped her recognize that these cravings were linked to feeling overwhelmed. She started taking short walks during that time instead of snacking. This small change, based on self awareness, improved her eating habits.

Another example is James, who struggled with anger and self hatred. Reflecting on his feelings, he realized he had gone back to a pattern of self-destruction, hooking up and having unprotected sex, after he lost his job. He realized he was looking for validation in women an in sex, instead of sitting with the uncomfortable feeling of facing his fear of having lost his job.

He shifted this to going back to the gym to workout 3 times a week and practicing mindfulness and journaling. He realized he had relapsed in his sex addiction and looked for someone he trusted to keep him accountable.

Awareness is a life saver!

Tips for Maintaining Self Awareness Over Time

Self awareness is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process. To keep it strong:

  • Set aside regular time for reflection, such as weekly reviews

  • Celebrate small wins to stay motivated

  • Be patient and kind to yourself when setbacks happen

  • Adjust your strategies based on what you learn
